FRANKLIN—A Southampton County Circuit Court judge on Tuesday found a Franklin man guilty of selling puppies from the trunk of a car on a 110-degree day.

Found guilty of neglecting animals, Carl Demetrius Basnight, 26, of 376 N. College Drive, Apt. C, was fined $501 for the July 5 incident in the parking lot between Walmart and Arby’s.

A Franklin General District Court judge granted the city custody of the two, five-week-old Shih Tzus. The dogs were taken to the city animal shelter.

Basnight originally was charged with three counts of selling dogs before seven weeks of age and three counts of failing to provide proper care of animals. All are misdemeanors.
