Franklin nets two big wins in two nights

COURTLAND—Franklin sophomore Marcus Stephens scored 20 points to lead the Broncos to a 43-31 come-from-behind win over rival Southampton High School on Wednesday.

Sophomore Domique Gainey added 10 points in the non-conference victory.

Southampton led 14-8 in the first quarter and 18-17 at the half. Franklin led 32-24 at the end of the third quarter.

Cedric Parham led the Indians with 10 points. Senior Jamal Johnson added 8, including a 3-pointer.

Southampton shot 6 for 18 from the free throw line and Franklin was 11 for 17.

Franklin opened its basketball season with a 48-45 overtime win over Tri-Rivers District opponent Appomattox Regional Governor’s School on Tuesday.

Franklin was down for most of the game, but battled back to tie it up 39-all at the end of regulation play. Franklin dominated during overtime, leading by as much as 7.

Gainey scored 11 points and made 12 rebounds and Stephens added 10 points.

“(It’s been a) good start for the Broncos, but (they have a) long way to go,” said Coach Danny Dillon.

Franklin returned one starter from last year. Also in the starting lineup are three sophomores and a junior.

“Right now it’s not pretty, but as hard as these guys work, we will look better real soon,” Dillon said. “Love their heart, and just glad to be around these kids again.”
