What has happened to America?

Published 8:53am Saturday, January 5, 2013

To the Editor:

Has America become the home of special interests and double standards?

If we lie to Congress, it’s a felony. If Congress lies to us, it’s politics.

The government spends millions to rehabilitate criminals, almost nothing for the victims. The public schools can teach you about homosexuality, but not God?

You can kill an unborn child, but to execute a mass murderer is wrong.

We don’t burn books in America; we rewrite them.

The communists and socialists are called “progressives.”

We cannot protect our borders with Mexico, but have no problem protecting the 38th parallel.

If you protest against President Obama, you’re a terrorist, or a racist, but you can burn the American flag or a George Bush effigy and it’s your First Amendment right.

You can have porn on your TV or Internet, but not a nativity scene in the public park during Christmas; Christmas has been eliminated in our society.

We no longer have criminals; they are now called sick people.

We can use a human fetus for medical research, but it’s wrong to use an animal.

We take money from those who work hard and penalize success, and give their money to those who don’t want to work.

We all say we support the Constitution, but only when it supports our ideology.

We have freedom of speech, but only when it’s politically correct. Parenting is a thing of the past. Parents instead want to be our “child’s friend,” or dope them up on Ritalin and video games.

The “land of opportunity” has become the “land of handouts.”

The similarity between Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf oil spill is that neither Bush nor Obama did anything.

How does the government handle a major crisis today? The government appoints a committee to determine whose fault it is, and then it threatens them, passes a law and raises our taxes to pay for it.

The government then declares “mission accomplished,” so it can get back to the campaign trail.

What has happened to America? The land of the free and the home of the brave? It doesn’t seem so?

RE: ”Most of my nephews are in their 20S, and they dont have a clue! I am afraid for the America my daughter will grow up in.”

“You are not the first person to fear for the future of their offspring AND America! Each generation seems to think that the next generation won’t be able to carry the societal baton!

For every airhead/clueless young person who ends up wrangling carts at Sprawl-Mart/slinging hash at IHOP for a living — there are 1000s of smart-as-a-whip — bright — intelligent young people ready to be passed the societal baton of leadership and run with it! It is no accident that America has endured AND PROSPERED for 236 years — dozens of generations!

Perhaps your nephews’ “cluelessness” is from exposure to excessive negativity from their relatives who were poor role models!

I read with amusement the ramblings of those who bemoan “the loss of the America that they once knew and loved.” They seem to hanker for an earlier — “warm and fuzzy” era in America that is mistakenly romanticized. An era when:
    A. Polio and other diseases that now have vaccines/are treatable were rampant
    B. Students were forced to participate in religious activities at school
    C. Many woman died from perforated uteruses while getting back-alley abortions
    D. Many women and children were victims of abuse because of weak /non-existent laws
    E. There was a theory that any American kid could grow up and become President but the reality was patently absurd
    F. On and on — ad nauseam/ad infinitum

    What has happened to America?
Our society has evolved with the times. Only a fool would argue that all of the changes have been for the better. But it is equally foolish to lament/infer that the changes/evolution of our society have somehow doomed us!

The majority of Americans who do the right thing have always been the glue that has kept the fabric of our society from unraveling.

A minority of scum — radicals — kooks — deadbeats — ne’eer-do-wells — criminals and those who will never do the right thing will always exist in a free society. Their shenanigans are simply burdens we must bear for living in a free society.

As one commentator so eloquently states: “[We] are lucky enough to live in one of the most prosperous periods of man’s existence in one of the most free societies to ever exist.”

Those who think otherwise are certainly entitled to their POV but their negativity falls on deaf ears among critical thinkers able to reason beyond the speciousness/superficiality of their cockamamie– half-baked assertions!

If we lie to Congress, it’s a felony. If Congress lies to us, it’s politics.
Same as it ever was. This is not America changing, it is America remaining the same.

The government spends millions to rehabilitate criminals, almost nothing for the victims. The public schools can teach you about homosexuality, but not God?
I agree with you about the correction industry and the lack of victim resources. Maybe we can take some of the corporate welfare and transfer the funds to victim assistance. The statement about homosexuality in school seems to make the assumption that there are classes on how to become gay. Including homosexual historical people in the curriculum, much like including significant minority people, is not teaching anyone to be gay. (I bet the curmudgeon that wrote the letter doesn’t like that either) God on the other hand is unconstitutional. Always has been, always will be.

You can kill an unborn child, but to execute a mass murderer is wrong.
The country is about even split on both of these subjects. Many consider an embryo and a viable human different things entirely. I do.

We don’t burn books in America; we rewrite them.
    Mainly in TX.

The communists and socialists are called “progressives.”
There is a difference between all three.

We cannot protect our borders with Mexico, but have no problem protecting the 38th parallel.
No one in Mexico is trying a military takeover. You are right we cannot protect our border, never could, this is not new. Maybe it’s time to try a new tactic. Like immigration reform.

If you protest against President Obama, you’re a terrorist, or a racist, but you can burn the American flag or a George Bush effigy and it’s your First Amendment right.
Not so much, but thanks for the hyperbole.

You can have porn on your TV or Internet, but not a nativity scene in the public park during Christmas; Christmas has been eliminated in our society.
Privacy of ones home, public park… anyone see a difference here? X-mas? Really? Eliminated? Did this letter originate in Iran?

We no longer have criminals; they are now called sick people.
Last I checked, they still are processed through the Criminal Justice system, flawed as it is. Prisons are not hospitals… taxpayers don’t pay for hospitals. (Though they should)

We can use a human fetus for medical research, but it’s wrong to use an animal.
Hmmm, dead fetus, live animal. Yeah sounds good to me, and the other millions of people that will benefit from stem cell research.

We take money from those who work hard and penalize success, and give their money to those who don’t want to work.
Corporate welfare, I want some of those penalties myself.

We all say we support the Constitution, but only when it supports our ideology.
Kind of like picking and choosing from the bible… but the letter is correct, we all do it, so why complain.

We have freedom of speech, but only when it’s politically correct. Parenting is a thing of the past. Parents instead want to be our “child’s friend,” or dope them up on Ritalin and video games.
Nope, you have freedom of speech period.
There have always been bad parents, there have always been terrible medical practices. this is not a decline, it is the status quo.

The “land of opportunity” has become the “land of handouts.”
    The corporations know this best.

The similarity between Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf oil spill is that neither Bush nor Obama did anything.
True, so why does the great majority keep electing between these two parties?

How does the government handle a major crisis today? The government appoints a committee to determine whose fault it is, and then it threatens them, passes a law and raises our taxes to pay for it.
I think this letter was in a time capsule. This is not new news from the decline of a society.

The government then declares “mission accomplished,” so it can get back to the campaign trail.
    Time capsule.

What has happened to America? The land of the free and the home of the brave? It doesn’t seem so?
Still better than most other choices, so calm down a little.

Our younger generation has been fed a steady diet of Liberalism from High school thru college for a number of years now. So it is no wonder that the Country turned Liberal when they became old enough to vote and have a say. We have set back on our hands and let it happen and for most of us even paid for it. I can’t imagine what another 10 years will bring.

In my day a fella could post a silly statement in response to a silly letter without being told to “grow up”. Nowadays everybody seems interested in telling me what I should or should not post. I didn’t know being constructive was a requirement. What is constructive about the ridiculous statements in your letter?

The point of my earlier post that apparently escaped you was that you sound like thousands of voices through the thousands of years before you who said that the world was going to hell in a hand-basket. You are lucky enough to live in one of the most prosperous periods of man’s existence in one of the most free societies to ever exist yet reading your letter you would think you were some kind of oppressed third world waif.

How you choose to spend your energy is up to you but don’t expect everyone else to take your whining seriously.

Larry; you are right on the money. Our country today is in a very sick way. We have no moral compass nor any cultural identity as Americans anymore. The progressives and their allies have been able to drive enough wedges between “we the people” so that we fill our time fighting amongst ourselves rather than standing as one people guarding our freedoms.

America is the same as always Larry you just see it in a different perspective. The world has changed and you can only hold it at bay only for awhile. We as a nation have been the big kid on the block for a while and remember Rome even had a downfall.Get involved in the process and try to change and not just sit there and complain and just maybe you can be an engine of change. Praise be to him that sits high and looks low
