Courtland felon charged with hunting deer over bait

Published 3:13pm Wednesday, January 30, 2013

COURTLAND—An eight-time Courtland felon admitted to baiting deer and devising a trap to make it easier to kill one, said Sgt. J.T. Worrell, supervisor with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries’ district that serves Isle of Wight and Southampton counties.

Lewis Scarborough III, 39, was taken to Southampton County Jail after his arrest on Jan. 5 — the last day of the deer season, Worrell said.

Robert Mulder Jr., 50, of Suffolk also was charged.

Officers had learned a wooded area off Delaware Road had tubes attached to trees that were filled with corn. The area also had a 50-pound salt block and numerous piles of corn.

The officers arrived that morning before the hunters.

“We sat there and watched them come in and get in their tree stands,” Worrell said. “Once the sun came up and got light, we approached them.”

The officers learned Scarborough had a criminal record in North Carolina.

He is also accused of placing fishhooks in the ground underneath the corn and tying line to the hooks and trees.

“If the animal were to come in and feed on the corn, it would get tangled in the fishhooks, and wouldn’t be able to get away,” Worrell said.

Scarborough was charged with hunting over bait, illegally possessing guns by a felon for allegedly having a shotgun and .22-caliber rifle, not wearing blaze orange and hunting with an illegal device. Mulder was charged with hunting over bait.

Mulder will appear in Southampton County General District Court at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12. Scarborough is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 12.

Fishing hooks, never heard of hunting deer with fishing hooks. I am a hunter and a fisherman, but I think a deer getting hooks cought in it’s mouth and it preventing it from eating and then starveing to death is a profile of a sadistic, deranged animal

Govt has decreed that it’s OK to kill deer with high-powered rifles with telescopic sights — from dozens of yards away — often sight unseen by the deer!
But they can’t be baited! That’s cheating/not fair to the deer?

Sounds like this “eight-time Courtland felon” and his accomplice were out for groceries instead of sport. We should be glad they were not in 7-11 or Sprawl-Mart stealing meat!

Shouldn’t there be a law against convicted felons possessing fire arms? Oh wait, there is! Well maybe if we pass a newer, better law they will obey it!

Why is an eight time felon still walking around free to begin with? If someone has been convicted of that many felonies, what makes you think there are going to change their ways now?

What exactly is a “Courtland felon”? Is he any different from a “Richmond felon”, or quite as dangerous as a “Norfolk felon”? Perhaps the sentence should read ” An eight time felon from Courtland”.

Everyone is so upset about baiting deer and using hooks? Basically anyone who uses bait in other states that have legalized it are horrible people along with fisherman and ‘Swamp People’ who use hooks on alligators. Also many seem to think coyotes are a problem around these parts yet more citizens have been injured by deer. Deer cause thousands of dollars annually in vehicle damage and eat the crops. I firmly believe we need to bring the population down and using bait would be a more reasonable approach than rifles. Thank you Lewis Scarborough and Robert mulder we need more people like you!

They should suffer the same fate as the deer would have. They are less than human. Pure evil.
