COURTLAND—Senior Day at Southampton High School saw SHS Softball team’s senior DeMone` Brickhouse reach base and score three times, while fellow senior Emily Nelson hit an inside-the-park home run to celebrate their last regular season home game Friday. It was a 10-3 win for the Lady Indians over Southside District foe Brunswick.

Megan Duck picked up the win for the Lady Indians who move to 10-3 on the season, with one game remaining in the regular season; another match up with the Bulldogs. That game will be played in Lawrenceville on Tuesday. Duck was able to scatter six Bulldog hits, strike out three and walk only one, all while pitching around a pair of errors that led to two of the three Brunswick runs in the fourth inning.

Brickhouse started the scoring for the Indians, leading off the game by working the count full and then being hit to reach first base. Kaylee Edwards hit a shot to left center that scored Brickhouse and scored herself on an error by the second basemen relaying the throw. Brickhouse came up huge in the second inning, walking to the plate with a pair of runners on and two out. A deep fly ball to right field was misplayed and allowed both of the runners to score and due to the misplay, she herself scored, bringing the score to 5-0 at the end of two.

The ladies tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Nelson’s inside the park home run. “It was great to see our two seniors step up tonight and play the way they did. And for the both of them to hit the ball and run the bases like they did tonight was great,” said Coach Susan Melbye.

The Lady Indians would go on to add single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Not to be lost in the senior dominated day, were outstanding days at the plate for a trio of underclassmen; Megan Duck, Courtney Greene & TaLisha Jenkins who went a combined 8 for 8 and scored four of the Indian runs.

The Lady Indians will close out their regular season on Tuesday in Lawrenceville and then await the results of the Bay Rivers and Battlefield District Tournaments to know their exact opponent in the Region I Regional Tournament, which is set to begin on Memorial Day, May 27.
