COLONIAL HEIGHTS—Tidewater Academy’s baseball team won its first state championship on Saturday, defeating Fuqua 3-0 at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights.

The Warriors, who finished the regular season ranked number four in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division III poll, held third-ranked Fuqua scoreless over seven innings, thanks to a two-hit, nine strikeout performance by pitcher Hunter Hawood. Haywood also went 1 for 3 at the plate, driving in to runs. J.D. Baker went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Payton Holdsworth went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored to help lead the Tidewater offense.

Longtime Warriors coach Paul Rogers said, “I’m happy for the kids and I’m happy for the school.”
