Republican campaign rally: A Republican campaign rally will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at Fred’s Restaurant. There will be a lot of food and fun. Learn how to get involved and have your picture taken with John and Sarah. For more information contact Kenny Truitt, 556-7011.
Open house: The YMCA will have an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. There is no charge. America On The Move Walk will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Meet in front of the YMCA. Water aerobics will be held from 10:15 to 11 a.m. at the indoor pool. Hip Hop from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Studio A. Body sculpt from 11:30 a.m. to noon at Studio A. Intro to spin from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Fitness for kids ages 4 to 12 at the small gym from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
applebee’s pancake breakfast: Franklin High School Senior Class (2009) will host an Applebee’s pancake fund-raiser from 8 to 10 a.m. It will be eat-in or take-out. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any senior at FHS. For more information, contact Rose Parker, senior class sponsor, 562-5187 Ext. 1323.
Car wash/bake sale: Franklin High School Band Boosters will sponsor a car wash and bake sale fund-raiser from 8 a.m. to noon at Sunoco on the corner of Armory Drive and College Drive. It is $5 per car for wash and rinse. Miscellaneous baked items will be on sale also. For more information, call 569-8033.
Bus tour: The Southampton County Historical Society is sponsoring a bus tour of Boykins and Branchville at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 27. It is conducted by Kitty Lassiter, Rick Francis and Arthur Harris. The cost is $27 per person, which includes a buffet lunch at the Butcher Block in Boykins. To reserve a spot, send your check, made out to the Southampton County Historical Society, to Lynda Updike, 33335 Statesville Road, Newsoms, VA 23874. Fish fry: Ivor Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a fish fry from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the fire house on Main Street. It will be catered by Leon Nixon Catering, dinners are $7 each and may be eaten in or taken out.

HYMN FESTIVAL: Franklin Baptist Church will host a regional Hymn Festival Sunday at 5 p.m. There is no admission charge for the Hymn Festival, but participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for Cooperative Ministry. Rose show: The Garden Club of Virginia 70th annual rose show, hosted by the Franklin Garden Club with Mary Nelson Thompson, co-chairwoman will be held Oct. 1 from 2 to 8 p.m. and Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Paul D. Camp Workforce Development Center. Flower arrangers from all of Virginia’s 47 clubs will compete in the artistic division of the show. Trophies will be awarded to the winners at the awards ceremony in both the artistic and horticultural classes at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 1. Admittance to the show is free and the public is welcome. Read for the record: A special “Read for the Record” Story Time will be held at Rawls Library in Courtland at 10 a.m. Oct. 2. Help us bring national attention to the importance of early childhood education by making Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign the largest shared reading experience ever. It is a national campaign to break the world record for the number of adults and children reading the same book in a single day. The book will be Corduroy. It is free. Southampton/Franklin habitat: Southampton/Franklin Habitat for Humanity will soon be taking applications for a minor home repair project. There will be a meeting to the public in order to discuss eligibility requirements for this rehab project. The ABC clinic offers low cost spay/neuter services, discount vaccinations, HW testing and preventative, microchipping, and more. Antique show: Paul D. Camp Community College Foundation will host its first antique car, truck and motorcycle show Oct. 4. The show will take place on the PDCCC Franklin campus from noon to 3 p.m., followed by judging and presentation of trophy awards. Music will be provided, as well as dash plates/magnets for all entries. Proceeds from the fund-raiser will be used to provide scholarships and support college program initiatives. Entry fees call for a donation of $20 during pre-registration, and $30 the day of the event. Donations are tax-deductible. Pre-registered by Sept. 26 is recommended. It is limited to the first 100 antique vehicles registered. The PDCCC Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation organized to secure resources, which promote the continuing progress of the college. Athletic booster Club: The Franklin High School Athletic Booster Club holds its monthly meetings in the FHS library on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The club raises money throughout the year to support the athletes. Funds are used towards uniforms, equipment, referees, transportation, etc. There is an annual membership fee in the amount of $10 per family which provides funding for the FHS athletic program. All sports pass (first ticket includes booster membership) $65 each additional ticket $55 (these tickets are good for all home regular season games). Football season tickets $30 (includes all home varsity and jv football games). Infield parking pass $20 (for all home varsity football games only). Senior health fair: “Looking Good, Feeling Good,” will be the theme of the Senior Health Fair Oct. 9 at the Smithfield Center. It is sponsored by the Isle of Wight Commission on Aging. Ben Garrett, outreach and education coordinator for the Virginia Department for the aging will be the guest speaker. A continental breakfast will be held at 9 a.m. There will be gifts, fashion show, show-dancing, music, flu shots (if available) screenings. Basket bingo benefit: A basket bingo to benefit the American Cancer Society is scheduled for Oct. 11 at the Courtland Ruritan Club with games beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door which entitles you to 10 regular games and additional cards can be purchased. Tickets are available at EVB-Main Street branch and The Peanut Patch in Courtland and at Designs by Sandra in Franklin. There will be door prizes and raffles and all prizes will be Longaberger products and can be previewed at 9 a.m. The Ruritan Club is located across the street from Southampton Academy on Old Plank Road. Smithfield 5K hog jog and walk: The seventh annual Smithfield 5K Hog Jog and Walk will be held Oct. 11 at Veterans Memorial in downtown Smithfield. In addition to the 5K race and walk, a kid’s fun run and post-race party will be held. Online registration for the event is available at www.active.com. Registration forms are also available for pick up at Smithfield/Isle of Wight Tourism Bureau and the Luter Family YMCA in Smithfield as well as Fine Lines Fitness in Carrollton. Woodmen of the world: The Woodmen of the World, Holly Lodge 18, Franklin, will hold its regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the lodge. This is a very special meeting as the lodge will be celebrating awards night for members with 25 and 50 years of service. Three other special awards will also be given. Help for veterans: A veterans service representative will be available to help veterans file claims for state and federal benefits in Franklin . Visits are scheduled to the Martin Luther King Center in Franklin on the third Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon. The Martin Luther King Center is located at 683 Oak St.
Blood drive: The Wakefield community hosted by The Virginia Diner will have a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 15.

100th anniversary: Ivor will celebrate its 100th anniversary beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 18 with a parade. There will be fireworks, a petting zoo, sky divers, craft booths, donkey softball and much more.

Spay and neuter clinic: Suffolk Humane Society along with Virginia Beach SPCA Neuter Scooter will sponsor a spay and neuter clinic on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Cat spay is $60; cat neuter is $40; dog spay Is $75 and up, depending on weight; and dog neuter is $70 and up, depending on weight. Vaccinations or vaccines will be provided on the day of surgery for a small fee. Heartworm testing preventative, flea preventative and microchip implant will be available as well. Bereavement support group: This is a confidential grief support open to all individuals who have lost a spouse.
