Yankees bring title to Windsor

SMITHFIELD—The Windsor Yankees won the Pinto League championship Sunday during a double-elimination tournament in Smithfield.

After ending the regular season with an 11-3 record, the Yankees were ranked No. 2 in the coach-pitch baseball league for 6- to 8-year-olds in the Smithfield-Surry area.

At No. 1 was the Smithfield Indians. The Yankees would defeat the Indians to move into first place and head to a game that was scheduled for Saturday.

The teams were only able to get to the third batter on Saturday before the game was called due to the severe weather and rescheduled for Sunday.

“The sun was high — not to mention hot — but the kids’ spirits were higher,” said fan Crishawna Bradshaw, the sister of player Derrick Daye Jr. “It was a close game, and the Indians did not lose lightly. They fought and played some of the best ball we had seen all season.”

After an intense game, the Windsor Yankees ended victorious over the Smithfield Indians with the score of 9-8.

The Windsor Yankees ended their season 15-4.
