Hayden fire deemed suspicious
Published Monday, June 29, 2009
FRANKLIN—The former Hayden School building was the scene of a small fire late Saturday night.
Franklin Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Mark Carr said the blaze started between 10:30 p.m. and midnight, causing minimal structural damage to the building on Oak Street.
“The fire amounted to debris burning in a hallway,” he said.
According to Carr, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
“The fire does appear to be suspicious in nature,” he said. Some items from the building have been sent to a lab to determine how the fire started.
“It will be a couple of weeks before we get a result,” Carr said.
The city is currently removing items from the building in anticipation of its sale to a group headed by Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia.
The building, after renovation, is slated to house apartments for senior citizens, an adult day-care center, a commercial kitchen, a Head Start center, Senior Services offices, medical support offices and a heritage museum.

OK not a good idea... You have already found mold, asbestos. Who knows what else??? There is no way you could possibly remove all of it. Especially enough for senior citizens and the very young whom can't take much of that mess anyway. Good idea for something that is needed, but poor poor choice of location.

It seems to me someone does not want it to happen. The CITY who was in charge of the building, used it as a storage building. Yes there are problems that can and should be fixed. The city let it sit far too long and it should have been torn down long ago, however it was not and now we have to fix it. I think it will serve a great purpose once it is finished. We should expect the same from Surburban Gardens, it is just sitting there and is nothing but an eye sore. Get rid of it already. My guess as to the fire, it is summer and kids in this area or atleast a lot of them having nothing to do and their parents are not watching. Hint, 15 year old in Suffolk fire, burns 3 homes.
