Hawks win first CIAA game
Published Wednesday, November 18, 2009
MURFREESBORO, N.C.—The Chowan University Hawks, playing their first CIAA basketball game after entering that conference, pulled off a 85–79 victory Monday in the Helms Center on the campus of Chowan University against the Trojans of Virginia State University.
Only being down 49–43 at the half, the Hawks continued to make a run at the Trojans.
After the match was tied for the sixth time, with the score 64 all and 9:52 left in the game, Charles Rhodes dropped a 3-pointer to put the Hawks up for the remainder of the game.
The Hawks had four players in double figures — Nate Walchuk and Charles Rhodes with 18 points each, Jaleel Nelson with 17 points and Lando Morrison with 14 points.
The Lady Trojans won 69–64.

I think it is great that the CIAA has diversified. It shows progress.

I guess you mean the CIAA diversified by admitting Chowan into a historically black conference? I guess thats why Chowan Volleyball went undefeated in the CIAA tournament and got an automatic bid to the NCAA DII Tournament. I predict Chowan will fare well in baseball and softball in the CIAA as well.
TN: How come you ran no stories about Chowan Volleyball winning the CIAA title in their first year competing in the conference, but the men's basketball team got an article for only their first win of the season? I think a championship deserves some recognition.

Will you are half right. Yes, I did mean that it is great that the Historically African American CIAA Conference finally has a school that is not an HBCU. I would not say that is the sole reason why Chowan went undefeated though. But let's be realistic. HBCU's are not known for volleyball, or lacross, or polo, or water polo, or ice hockey. Chowan may very well go undefeated in any of those sports, if they have teams. And I would applaud them, because maybe the HBCU's will learn a little about those sports and advance in them. So if you are trying to pick a fight, you have the wrong guy. I like the change.
