I like a positive attitude but twenty years from now....... Franklin and many many small towns will be down. Life will never be the same as some of us know it. Beautiful country, century farms, soy, corn and peanuts......no matter.. nothing will be the same. We must prepare and market ourselves for: being a bedroom community, being an organic and local farming center or being a region willing to fully accommodate the navy. This is the 21st century and its time to get real. I am sentimental but I am dismayed by the naivete on these pages. The most industrious regions of our nation get excited by changing with the times. Here, we are offended by it.

Thank you Chuck. Attending one of their board meetings would be interesting. I'd love to read the last meeting's minutes, today's agenda, past and future business, and business that is tabled. Is anyone privy to this information outside the board? What, exactly, is in Mr. Smolak's inbox and outbox???

Back to economic development, Mr. Smolak and his office may be working diligently; regardless, the question is whether it is an operation that is worth its salt. All offices and positions need to be evaluated by weighing their cost against their record.

Love Woodie Guthrie. Robeson was a card carrying member of the communist party during the cold war, died a pauper. A really interesting story. I admire him in some ways, just didn't want to applaud his truly great performance without an attempt to qualify his credentials.

My favorite song is Ol'Man River....Love Paul Robeson singing Ol'Man River in Showboat...didn't love Paul Robeson's politics(now dead)and don't love it in the Tidewater News.

ibdeaddude, It's a sad story, I cry for the Moyler family and Ed himself but please, There is no getting around the fact that it was a HUGE crime. This is not taking $40 out of the cash register. It was a major heist that friends and loved ones must recognize.

Victimless crime? What about the house on fire that isn't served with the equipment that could have been? What about the patients at the hospital that go without a needed test or a substandard one because there is not the latest equipment? What about the lack of a nurse's attention, because she has too much to do? What about the kid who could cut the academics at University of Richmond and do himself or herself proud as well as Franklin/Southampton....but can't afford to go because his parents have just been laid off at IP? What is a victim to you??? Somebody who gets punched in the nose and their wallet lifted?
