Slander is an opinion, and people are entitled to their opinion. There is a 'removal' button on the blog when the comments become overboard. When I or my family and friends make the headlines negatively, I hope I have the grace to accept the comments. No doubt willl be hitting that 'removal' button vigorously. People as a rule have a short attention span, and there are more pressing issues to focus on than a women in stress, although I do not believe any of us who volunteer for a nonprofit will ever forget a corrupt lawyer. All part of our story and needs to be reported on.

Looking forward to more stores about the rivers, keep them coming (past, present or future trends). One of the best reasons to subcribe to the TN is this column.

How does one start a petition that city employees and leaders have their wages garnished for back taxes? Franklin City Councilman Greg McLemore is not a role model. His leadership standards are lacking.

We need to ask all of our Board of Supervisors why they always grant Brown public money for his tribe. How about it, Anita?

Supervisor Brown serioulsy needs to be questioned. Even if one doesn't live in his district, the other supervisors always seem to follow after him. I am questioning my Supervisor why SHE consistantly votes favorable on all of Brown's requests (I checked her record in the county minutes. I am dissappointed in you, Anitia!)

There are farmers who drive 'fancy' cars, and there are teachers who drive 'fancy' cars. There are farmers who drive old cars, and there are teachers who drive old cars. But, they all pay property tax on those cars, the 'age' and make of their vehicle is their choice. It is too easy for all of us to spend money as a rule (whether that be at the grocery store shopping for food or padding that county budget). We all need to be more efficient to be more effective (and that does mean that the school system has a much longer row to hoe than the landowners, the facts support this).

We need to discuss whether we want to be another ugly urban center or remain backward rural hicks. By "we", I do not mean the Navy, VA. Port Authority, VA Beach's concerned citizens against jet noise, super-size coal plants, high speed trains that won't stop here but noisily pass through, and other groups that do not respect the fact there there is SOMETHING out here in the countryside. The 25,000 jobs will empty out the cities a bit, giving them room but crowding us. While we need jobs, this is too many jobs and the cost to us for the new infrastructure of toll-road access, new schools, water & sewage systems will hurt our pockets; what about the folks that are hanging on here since they lost their jobs? Farmers actually pay more than their share in property taxes vs the suberian family with kids to educate at $18,000 apiece each year! This massive road bringing box cars of imports won't be the quick fix they need for the short term, and isn't the answer for the long term. Maybe we are looking at this wrong, does the U.S. really need all those cheap China imports, especially if we all will be unemployed since so many jobs are continuing to be moved overseas? We need several small manufacturing type of industries, not these giants; a little tourism so the world starts to appreciate our historic and natural heritage (Nottoway River needs to join the Blackwater as Scenic); and above all, we have got to start this appreciation with ourselves. I would rather be a hick in the sticks than a low-paid industrial cog in the wheel.

I just wondering if there are two tribes in Southampton County or just one? When I have attended the Board of Supervisors' meetings only one tribe is acknowledge as being in this county by Supervisor/Chief Brown. The Tidwater News in this article did acknowledge two tribes in this county -- will the Southampton County of Supervisors do the same? Will the County make up the gap in monetary support to the Nottoway of Virginia or will they only contribute to their fellow Board of Supervisor's tribe?

VA ranks where on the list of 50 states in energy efficiency? Near the bottom at 43rd. If we were not so wasteful we wouldn't need Coal or Nuclear plant being built (or a greener alternative, nuclear plants have come a long way, as the French can tell us). But, as long as we are not going to change our habits and waste energy, can we not find a more environmental friendly energy plant beyond dirty coal? Wind power, which Kaine promoted off the coast of VA Beach seems to be a good alternative. A nuclear plant, nearer the cities where power is consumed and would not zap into transmission concerns should also be considered. I think Western Tidewater is simply a dumping ground for whatever the cities do not want (OLF, high speed rail which won't stop here, prisons. and this coal plant). We need to think about what we want our rural region to be, seriously, and not let others dictate their needs to us (often under the disguise of patrioism).

On Do you agree with Dendron and Surry County's approval of land use and zoning applications for the construction of a massive coal-fired power plant?
