The Western Tidewater Health District saw a rise of 29 instances in Thursday morning’s report from the Virginia Department of Health, topping 400 total for the first time.
It mirrored a steep rise throughout the country from Wednesday to Thursday, with 885 new instances for a cumulative total of 15,846.
Fifteen people in the district have died of this disease — one in Southampton, two in Isle of Wight County and 12 in Suffolk. About 46 people in the district are hospitalized.
Statewide, there are 967 COVID-19 patients hospitalized, and 583 hospitalized and awaiting test results, according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association. Of the two groups united, 372 are at the ICU and 208 are on ventilators. Approximately 21 percent of ventilators available statewide are in use for many patients.
