The shift from linear television to direct-to-consumer streaming has reshaped every corner of the media industry. For Discovery Inc., that transition required not only a coherent product strategy but the organizational and operational infrastructure to support a global platform launch. David Leavy was a central figure in that effort — a media executive whose quarter-century tenure at the company placed him in the room where its most consequential decisions were made.

A Company in Motion

Discovery Inc. spent much of its history as a cable television powerhouse, built around factual entertainment and a growing portfolio of nonfiction networks. By the mid-2010s, the company was expanding aggressively. The 2018 agreement to acquire Scripps Networks Interactive — home to HGTV, Food Network, and the Travel Channel — was one of the most significant consolidations in nonfiction television history. David C. Leavy, serving as Chief Corporate Operating Officer at the time, was instrumental in that deal, which fundamentally broadened Discovery’s audience reach and content footprint.

The Scripps acquisition reflected a deliberate strategy: build scale in content before the streaming transition forced the issue. That logic would prove prescient.

The discovery+ Launch

In January 2021, Discovery launched discovery+, its direct-to-consumer streaming platform. The debut brought together content from across Discovery’s network portfolio — including Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Animal Planet, and Investigation Discovery — into a single subscription product.

Launching a streaming platform of that scope is operationally complex in ways that extend well beyond the content itself. Coordinating technology infrastructure, distribution partnerships, marketing, regulatory requirements across markets, and internal communications demands a command of functions that few individual executives span. David Leavy’s role as Chief Corporate Operating Officer positioned him directly across that coordination challenge.

The launch of discovery+ represented one of the clearest demonstrations of what Leavy’s operational background had been building toward — the capacity to move a large, legacy media company into a new business model without losing institutional coherence in the process.

The WarnerMedia Merger and What Followed

The formation of Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022 — created through Discovery’s merger with WarnerMedia — produced one of the most complex integrations in media history. The combined company brought together HBO, CNN, Warner Bros. Studios, DC Entertainment, and the Turner networks under a single corporate structure, alongside Discovery’s existing portfolio.

David C. Leavy took on the role of Chief Corporate Affairs Officer for the new company. In that capacity, he oversaw corporate relations, global government relations and public policy, corporate marketing and events, global communications, corporate research, and social responsibility — a portfolio that required coordinating external-facing functions across a dramatically enlarged and more structurally complex organization.

The merger created immediate questions about brand identity, regulatory posture, and communications strategy that fell squarely within Leavy’s domain. Navigating the early months of WBD’s existence as a public company, while managing the expectations of press, policymakers, and employees across multiple legacy cultures, required the kind of institutional steadiness that is difficult to manufacture and easy to recognize in retrospect.

Operating CNN on a Global Scale

David Leavy currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of CNN Worldwide, overseeing the network’s commercial, revenue, operational, technology, and promotional operations globally. The role represents a continuation of the operational trajectory that defined his work at Discovery and WBD — responsibility for the functions that allow a large media institution to operate as a coherent enterprise rather than a collection of separate divisions.

CNN’s position as a global news network introduces operational considerations that go beyond what most media companies manage: editorial independence, international bureau infrastructure, technology demands specific to live news, and revenue models that span advertising, licensing, and distribution. The COO function at that level is, by definition, a role for someone who has operated inside complexity for a long time.
